The Temple of Apollo

The remains of the temple of Apollo, from the northwest. The adyton--the secret inner chamber where the Pythia was inspired by the god--should be at the rear of the temple, the end closest us in this view. But the archaeologists have found no evidence for it there.
The remains are mainly those of the reconstruction during the 4th century B.C. on much earlier foundations. The temple was kept up well into the Roman period; robbing of metal clamps in the middle ages led to its ruin (with the help, I suspect, of earthquakes). Restoration work during 1939-1941 set up the columns at what was the front of the temple. The temple was in the Doric order.
