The
Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
(DFLL) prepares students to live in the global
community of today and tomorrow.
We
teach modern and classical languages in a variety
of contexts, including history, culture, literature,
philosophy, and business. And we teach courses
in translation about foreign literatures and
cultures.
We
employ our expertise in foreign languages to
do research in literature, history, philosophy,
linguistics, pedagogy, and other fields.
We
serve the university, our professional communities,
local and regional schools, and the general public
by providing support and leadership to help citizens
learn how to thrive in a increasingly globalized
future.
Our
department is divided into five sections: Classics (Latin & Greek), East
Asian (Chinese & Japanese),French, German,
and Spanish.
We also offer a major in Foreign
Language and International Trade, an MA
program in French or Spanish, and coursework
in American
Sign Language.
The
Chair of the Department is Anne
Winston-Allen (Associate
Professor of German). The Graduate advisor is Lourdes
Albuixech (Associate Professor of Spanish).
Section heads are David
Johnson (Classics), Charles
Hammond (East Asian), Véronique
Maisier (French), Anne
Winston-Allen (German), and Dimitrios
